Architecture and Amnesia
I look around at layered landscapes here. This city emerged from the shocking chaos of gold diggings and sludge, its ornate facades rose over timber and stone conduits that buried Ballarat's battered waterways. The rivers and creeks that surround the city, and whose presence emerges intermittently amongst its streets, continue to influence its character. Its heavy buildings press into the sites of old mines, and appear against the backdrop of once-pillaged, now treed, slopes and hills. Visually, it is a fascinating place, with a history of harsh struggle and determined endeavour.
