Dig a little into the layered landscape of the past, wherever you are, and you don’t know what you will find. I discovered that in the mid-nineteenth century Ballarat was wealthier than Melbourne, and its wonderful Victorian Renaissance architecture was constructed over the environmental disaster of sludge washed down from gold-mining sluicing on nearby Black Hill.
