Close by, there is the Black Hill and Yarrowee river, which have endured major human impacts over time.
Gold mining in the 1850s–1870s sliced and sluiced out the hillside, leaving sandstone cliffs. Destructive as this was, iron oxidation turned the rock a beautiful pink-red. Here it is, used as a pigment in this painting.
