Cradled Gold
As I stood gazing at Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, on an overcast day, I wondered how it got its poetic name. I found out that in 1827 it was actually named by explorer Joseph Fossey. In a slightly less poetic vein, he thought it had the shape of a gold-mining cradle. He - like many colonists - clearly had wealth on his mind! However, what caught my eye on this particular day was the luminous colour of the vegetation and button grasses, another kind of gold.
